CSU Long Beach

About: SQE has been active on Cal State Long Beach since 2010. Since their founding, Long Beach’s SQE chapter has planned demonstrations, rallies, banner drops, and actions surrounding issues such as tuition & fee increases, defunding ethnic studies, and the lack of transparency. They have met with the campus president and lobbied at the state Capitol. CSULB SQE frequently works with other student organizations such as La Raza and the Sociology Student Association. In 2015, SQE actively fought a $165 University Student Union fee increase and they helped bring the highest voter turnout in CSULB history. Last semester SQE joined the coalition, We Are CSULB, to bring justice to a student of color who was assaulted during a classroom discussion about race. Cal State Long Beach’s chapter of SQE is determined to create a CSU system that is fully funded by the state like it was originally created for.

Cal Poly Pomona

About: At Cal Poly Pomona, SQE believes that all students should have the right to an affordable, accessible, quality education without fearing it could be taken away. This last year we embarked on our Alternative Transportation Campaign, which has been getting much attention from students, faculty, administration, and even local government. In a study we conducted, we found that 58% of students have either missed class or been late to their classes due to not being able to find parking. Administration thinks that by building another parking structure this problem will go away, but that is just a band-aid solution that will quickly fail. Administration needs to find a sustainable solution that will last for a long time, such as student bus passes with Foothill Transit, more bike lanes and bike racks, and more incentives to our almost non-existent carpool system. Not being able to get to class threatens student’s accessibility to their education and we will not let that happen anymore.

Cal Poly SLO

About: Cal Poly SLO’s chapter of SQE started in February 2016, and hit the ground running with its organizing around the Fight for Five. With a knack for direct action and confrontational organizing tactics, SLO’s chapter of SQE planned sit-ins, organized several banner drops, performance art routines, and searing editorial pieces in local newspapers and media outlets. Their organizing against the administration’s proposal for a $188 million new university union that would have raised fees by $600 per year can be credited with blocking the referendum in an unsuspected political upset–switching the student population’s opinion and soliciting a supportive resolution from the academic senate at the last minute. Cal Poly SLO’s SQE chapter is looking forward to building a movement for free public higher ed across the State of California, and taking the fight to where it belongs–with the billionaires.
